Puducherry’s De Facto Merger day celebrated

Puducherry on Thursday celebrated the 59th De Facto Merger day with Chief Minister N Rangasamy hoisting the national flag.

Puducherry: Puducherry on Thursday celebrated the 59th De Facto Merger day with Chief Minister N Rangasamy hoisting the national flag at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi here.

He also honoured freedom fighters on the occasion. Speaker V Sabapathy and a large number of freedom fighters were present.

Puducherry and its outlying regions of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam merged de facto with Indian on November 1, 1954 in the wake of a referendum held on October 18, 1954 in the neighbouring Kizhoor village.
After ascertaining the wishes of the people that Puducherry should be liberated, the then French administration inked a Treaty of Cession with Indian Union transferring de facto the four regions effecting their merger with Indian Union.
