New Delh: India`s Ratnika Batra survived a second-set slip to stun fifth-seeded Stephani Scimone of Italy in a thrilling three-setter in the opening round of the USD 10,000 ITF women`s tournament on Tuesday.
Ratnika saw off Scimone 7-5 0-6 6-3 in a first round match at the DLTA complex and will take on compatriot Rutuja Bhosale in the second round. Rutuja beat South African Tegan Edwards 7-5 6-1 in another match.
Second seed Rushmi Chakravarthi also reached the second round after beating Sai Samhitha Chamarthi 6-3 6-1. She will take on Ju-Eun Kim of Korea in the next round.
Seventh seed Ankita Raina set up a clash with Chinese Zhaoxuan Yang after overcoming compatriot Vaniya Dangwal 6-4 6-3.
Fourth seed Ashvarya Shrivastava also crossed her first hurdle after beating Jung-Yoon Shin of Korea 7-5 6-2 and would take on Patricia Haas of Austria in the second round.
Nimisha Mohan and eighth seed Prerna Bhambri also won their respective first round match to set up a clash within themselves.
Nimisha defeated Smriti Joon 6-0 6-2, while Prerna beat fellow Indian Tarrannum Handa 6-3 6-1 in another match.
However, there was heartbreak for Rishika Sunkara who fought her heart out before going down to third-seed Nadia Abdala of Mexico 5-7, 6-2, 0-6.
