Gangtok: Sports and Youth Affairs department of Sikkim has provided a total of Rs 32.94 lakh as cash incentives to 121 sportspersons to encourage the talented youngsters in the state.
The recipients include 36 boxers, 32 footballers, 31 taekwondo players, 10 archers, five athletes, three spikers, three paddlers and one special Olympics medallist.
Handing over the cheques to the sportspersons, who won medals at various competitions in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Sports Minister N K Pradhan said that the incentives were a token of appreciation for their success.
The minister also handed over cheques worth Rs 36.50 lakh to 70 senior secondary schools and colleges in the state to carry out various National Service Scheme (NSS) activities in their respective institutions.
The department would also provide cash incentives to those who have won medals in different domestic tournaments in the period of 2008-2009, Pradhan said.
Sports Secretary H K Karki assured regular support and assistance towards the well being of sportspersons and sports infrastructure in the state.
Sikkim Olympic Association chief P K Pradhan hoped that the state`s sportspersons will bring more laurels from national and international events.
