Johannesburg: Although the Indian football team may not be a part of the game’s biggest carnival, there is something to look forward for the Indian fans at the forthcoming FIFA World Cup. In a first of its kind, music composers Salim and Sulaiman have been asked by the organizing committee to compose the anthem of the upcoming mega event to be held in South Africa between June 11 and July 11. According to sources, the duo will also perform at the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Cup on June 11 and July 11 respectively. Giving them company would be names like African singers Loyiso Bala and Eric Wainaina. An elated Salim told reporters how it all started when a friend from Africa requested them to compose a song, which later reached the FIFA organizing committee. “It’s called the African Promise. They (FIFA committee members) loved it so much that they wanted it as the anthem of the World Cup. The song’s written by my wife Jeanne and we will also be performing it for the Nelson Mandela Foundation after which we intend having a concert, too,” he said. The duo will fly to Johannesburg in June for the opening ceremony and then come back to India before going again for the closing ceremony.
