Samares impresses on day one

Playing on his home turf, Samaresh Sardar returned a superb three-under par 69 in the first round of the Goodricke East India Amateur Stroke Play Golf Championship at Royal Calcutta Golf Club on Sunday.

Tied at the same score with him is young Ashbeer Singh Saini from Rail Coach Factory Golf Club, Kapurtala, also the home club of Gaganjeet Bhullar. Ashbeer returned a card consisting of seven birdies and four bogies, while Samaresh birdied four holes and bogied once. 81 players are in the fray for 32 spots for the Match Play Championship which is beginning Tuesday. Abhijit Chadha from Chandigarh Golf Club along with Rommel Majumdar from Poona Club are tied at third position with one-under par 71. Sanjeev Mehra(RCGC), Kader Ali (RCGC) and Mohammad Wazir(Delhi) are tied at fifth position with par round of 72.Karan Vasudeva, winner of Inter-state championship played earlier, is tied at 14th with a score of three overpar 75. Karan managed two birdies -- one on the par five 15th and the next on par four 16th -- but made a double bogey on the 17th to add to the bogies on seventh, tenth and 14th. Jasjeet Singh, runner up in the Inter state, is tied at eighth position with a one-over par 73. At five-over par 77 there are 31 players and seven players tied at the 32nd position with six over par 78. There will be sudden death play-off for the winners position as well as for the 32nd position in case of a tie. PTI
