Sharath crashes out of World TT Championship
Sharath Kamal crashed out of the World Table Tennis Championships, losing in the first round to Chen Chien-An of Chinese Taipei 1-4 in Rotterdam.
New Delhi: India`s Sharath Kamal crashed out of the World Table Tennis Championships, losing in the first round to lower-ranked Chen Chien-An of Chinese Taipei 1-4 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
World No.54 Sharath, the only Indian to figure in the men`s singles main draw, went down 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 7-11, 9-11, to 106-ranked Chen Tuesday.
Sharath met a similar fate when he teamed up with Subhajit Saha later in the day. The Commonwealth Games doubles gold medallists were humbled by the North Korean pair of Kim Nam Chol and Ri Chol Guk 4-11, 12-10, 13-15, 7-11, 7-11, in the first round.
The other Indian pair, Amalraj Anthony and Soumyadeep Roy, managed to snatch a game from the second-seeded Chinese Wang Hao and Zhang Jike before losing 11-7, 5-11, 8-11, 5-11, 5-11.
Madhurika Patkar, Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak did well to make it to the main draw of the women`s singles but failed to get past the first hurdle.
However, the Indian challenge is not yet over in the mega event.
Roy and Anthony are left with their singles consolation matches while Shamini Kumaresan and Mamata Prabhu will compete in the women`s singles consolation category Thursday.
The consolation event is played amongst the players who lose in the initial rounds of the qualifiers.
