Sohrabuddin encounter case: SC to decide on SIT probe
The Supreme Court is likely to decide on a petition demanding a Special Investigative Team (SIT) probe into the 2005 Sohrabuddin encounter case on Wednesday.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is likely to decide on a petition demnading a Special Investigative Team (SIT) probe into the 2005 Sohrabuddin encounter case on Wednesday.
Earlier on September 3, the Supreme Court has asked the Gujarat Government as to why the Sohrabuddin Sheikh alleged fake encounter case not be entrusted to the Special Investigations Team (SIT).
The SIT headed by former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) RK Raghavan is investigating the post Godhra riots.
The apex court has also directed the Modi Government to specify an interim compensation for Sohrabuddin`s brother Rubabuddin Sheikh.
Sohrabuddin was shot dead by the Gujarat police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in November 2005. It was alleged that his wife Kausar Bi and another witnesses Tulsiram Prajapati were also killed by the police to destroy evidence.
The case was initially investigated by IPS officer Geeta Johri, who termed the encounter as fake.
Basing on Johri`s report, IPS officer DG Vanzara and other officers like Raj Pandian and Rajasthan top cop MN Dinesh were arrested.
Incidentally, the hearing of the case comes even as the Gujarat government is facing flak in another case of fake encounter killing. A judicial probe report, had earlier this week, ruled that the Ishrat Jahan encounter in 2004 was fake.
