SSCB wins gold, Manipuri girls dominate day 1 in Weightlifting

Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) grabbed the first gold in the men`s section while Manipur girls dominated the inaugural day of the weightlifting event of the 34th National Games here on Tuesday.

Delhi CWG games bronze medalist V Srinivasa Rao lifted 100 kgs in snatch and 126 kgs in clean and jerk to grab the yellow metal with a total lift of 226. Rao, who had set up a national games record in jerk by lifting 135 kgs, failed to touch the mark as he lifted 126 in clean and jerk in the current edition. SSCB lifter was closely followed by Myur Sinhasane of Maharashtra, who lifted total 225 kgs (snatch-103 kgs and clean and jerk-122 kgs.) Sinhasane has to content with a silver. M Tamil Selvan of Tamil Nadu lifted total 205 kgs to stand third and won the bronze. He lifted 95 kgs in snatch and 110 kgs in clean and jerk. Shaya Devi got the better of her opponents when she lifted 75 kgs in snatch and 95 kgs in clean and jerk to top the chart with a total of 170 kgs to bag the gold in the women`s 53 kgs weight category. She was followed by PLiainu Chanu (Assam), who lifted total 168 kgs (snatch 73 kgs and clean and jerk 95 kgs) and had to satisfied with a silver medal. Orissa lifter Minati Sethi finished third in the same weight category with a total lift of 161kgs. Sethi lifted 71 kgs in snatch and 90 kgs in clean and jerk 90 kgs to earn bronze. In the 48kgs weight category, Soniya Chanu of Uttar Pradesh emerged victorious with a total lift of 157kgs which including 68kgs in snatch and 89 kgs in clean and jerk. Kh. Sanjita Chanu of Manipur finished closed to Chanu as she lifted total 154 kgs. Chanu lifted 67 kgs in snatch and 87 kgs in clean and jerk to win the silver. She was followed by Sandhya Rani of Jharkhand. Rani`s total 151 kgs lift was contributed with snatch 65 kgs and clean and jerk 86 kgs. PTI
