Mumbai, April 19: The employees of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), who are on a strike, have been served termination notice under ESMA for causing hardship to bus commuters.
The employees` unions are on a 72-hour strike from midnight on Wednesday to press their demand for revised pay scales.
BEST General Manager Uttam Khobragade warned the staff and said, “Employees services will be terminated if they do not report to work today.”
According to sources, 300 newly recruited drivers are likely to be deployed by BEST today and they will start hiring new staff from tomorrow.
On June 7 2006, the BEST Workers Union had entered into an agreement with BEST to refer issues like revision of pay scales, dearness allowance, house rent allowance, leave travel assistance and various other perks to a three-member Pay Revision Committee (PRC).
BEST GM Khobragade had recently criticised BEST Workers Union general secretary Sharad Rao for his allegation that the management was trying to delay negotiations with the union on the issue of an interim dearness allowance.
"Rao claimed the BEST undertaking, despite having earned a profit of Rs 276.50 crore, was not ready to clear the dearness allowance of the workers," he said.
However, according to the audited financial balance sheet for 2005-06, BEST incurred a net loss of Rs 178.95 crore, Khobragade said.
