Internationally, few have been the successes of the Mexican national team. "El Tri" has only one official tournament win with the FIFA Confederations Cup 1999. Has participated in the Copa America in which he outlines two finals lost to Argentina and Colombia (1993 and 2001), in addition to five times winning the Concacaf Gold Cup.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Difficult was the way of the Mexican national team in the qualifiers. It started with Hugo Sanchez, who was dismissed after the Under-23 national team failed to qualify for Beijing 2008 Olympics. Sven-Göran Eriksson took the team without much success and after they lost to Honduras was fired. Javier Aguirre took him in a complicated time but make it to the World Cup after winning five games and tying one, in the Hexagonal Final.
The Mexican team has quality players like Rafael Marquez in the defence, Cuauhtemoc Blanco in the midfield and Guillermo Franco in the attack, elements that are the backbone of Coach Javier Aguirre.
Mexico`s main weakness is the lack of firepower. The Mexican national team create the chances but can fail to make them count. That prevented having a base line-up in the front, and three coaches who were in the tie experimented with several strikers.
Javier Aguirre is a coach who motivates his players, and proved it when too the management team after Sven-Göran Eriksson. His general approach is 4-3-3, but may vary depending on their opponents` movements.
Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago Fire): One of the most popular players of Mexican football. He will play the coming months in Vera Cruz to reach the World Cup in optimal conditions. This veteran but talented player has a precise touch on the ball.
RAFAEL MÁRQUEZ (BARCELONA): Solid defender and national team captain. He is a player who scores well and hardly makes mistakes in the sector lower. His explosive temper has brought problems.
GUILLERMO FRANCO (WEST HAM): Striker has had regularity in recent games in English football. The Argentine player is a naturalized Mexican who fights for the ball constantly and is a threat to the rivals.
BEST FOOTBALLING MOMENT
Although qualified into the second round in the last World Cup, the better appearance of Mexico was when they played at home: in 1970. They were eliminated in the quarter finals, in the same instance as in 1986. Those were the best records of `El Tri` in a World Cup.
OFF THE PITCH
Famous for: The tequila is a drink that is produced by fermentation and distillation of the juice extracted from agaves. There are groups that are called "Mariachis" interpreting many facets of regional Mexican music.
Most likely to: There are going to be tons of typical Mariachi’s hats in South Africa.
WORLD CUP OBJECTIVE
The objective is very clear, and is to go beyond that bloody fourth game, which stopped Mexico’s dreams in the last four World Cups. The team will have a concentration period of 60 long days before the World Cup, and will try to go at least to quarter-finals.
