Washington: Seal Team 6, the crack unit of American naval commandos that killed Osama Bin Laden are the elite of the elite of the US Special Forces group.
Its ranks are so exclusive no one can apply. Instead, the Team 6 members are recruited from existing SEAL teams and constitute those who have put in years of exemplary service.
As per US media reports, officially there is no Team 6 and is only known as the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.
Most information about the group and its activities are classified but it is believed to have been formed in response to the failed 1980 attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran.
Known as ‘DevGru’ at their home base Dam Neck in Virginia, the members of Team 6 are all "black" operatives - they exist outside military protocol, with no records about their activities being maintained.
They engage in operations that are at the highest level of classification. The team reports to the President and operate worldwide on classified presidential directives.
The Seal 6 operates as a component of the Joint Special Operations Command has hunted down key al Qaeda and Taliban figures since 2001 in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia.
With regards to the operation to kill Osama Bin Laden, as per reports, the team had replicated the one-acre Abbottabad compound at Camp Alpha in Bagram Air Base and carried out trials since early April.
From Afghanistan they boarded special MH-60 helicopters and headed to Abbottabad, 60 kilometres from Islamabad. Armed to teeth along with tactical signals, and hyperspectral imagers, they neutralised the “target” in flat 40 minutes and made the trip back with the body of world’s most wanted man –Osama bin Laden.
