Margao: A battle for supremacy is on the cards as Salgaocar Sports Club take on former champions Churchill Brothers in an eighth round I-League match at the Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.
Salgaocar, who have 15 points from seven matches, are placed second in the table, two points behind Churchill Brothers. East Bengal top the table with 18 points.
Both teams look equally balanced and will aim for an outright win to consolidate their position.
Salgaocar have been consistent in their performance and their midfield has combined well. Gilbert Olivero and Anthony Barboso have kept the rival defence on the backfoot with their looping crosses. Yusif Yakubu and Ryuji Sueoko have combined together to score nine goals.
Churchill`s main strength is striker Okolie Odafe who has been pivotal to their attack. He has tormented the rival defence scoring as many as 15 goals.
Their midfield, however, has been unpredictable. They have buckled under pressure against stronger teams. If they are able to overcome the pressure against their rivals tomorrow, half of the battle will be won.
"It`s going to be a tough match as both teams will be fighting to maintain supremacy," Churchill coach Vincent Subramanian said.
"We know their style of playing and weaknesses, but we will fight to collect full points," added Subramanian.
Salgaocar coach Karim Bencherifa, too, said that it is going to be a tough match. "They have a good striker in Okolie who can win matches on his own," he said.
