The 22-year-old Red Bull driver appeared to have ironed out any ‘f-duct’ related issues and posted a time of one minute 38.052 seconds on his final lap of the session pipping Pole Robert Kubica of Renault by a tenth of a second.
Australian Mark Webber was third quickest in the second Red Bull ahead of German Adrian Sutil of Force India.
Ferrari driver Spaniard Fernando Alonso held the fastest time until four minutes from the end and finished fifth quickest.
Brazilian Rubens Barichello of Williams was sixth quickest followed by Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi in the second Force India and Brazilian Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari.
McLaren duo Britons Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton wound up ninth and tenth fastest after struggling to match the pace of their rival teams.
Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, 41, finished 15th fastest.
