WB Minister underlines the need for National Sports Policy

West Bengal Sports and Youth Services Minister Kanti Ganguly on Wednesday advocated the need for a National Sports Policy for holistic development of sports in the country.

Kolkata: West Bengal Sports and Youth Services Minister Kanti Ganguly on Wednesday advocated the need for a National Sports Policy for holistic development of sports in the country.

Replying to the debate on his department’s budget, Ganguly regretted that even after 63 years of independence no national sports policy was formulated in the country.

Urging the Centre for immediate passing of the policy, Ganguly said the state government was in favour of bringing a bill to formulate guidelines for development of sports here.

Referring to Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal’s guideline making one playground mandatory for every school, Ganguly said this would require a lot of expenses and thus entail joint venture between Centre and state governments.
Despite its limitations, the state government was trying to develop 600 playgrounds state-wide at a cost of Rs 6 crore within this year, he said.

The state government wanted to raise 15,000 sports talents in the state and initiated steps to provide them each with Rs 400 monthly stipend, he said.
