PALAKKAD: A man accused of theft was tied up and brutally beaten by a mob in Palakkad district in Kerala on Thursday. The cruelty did not end there, some in the mob even went ahead and clicked selfies with the tied up man. Badly beaten and bruised, 30-year-old tribal identified as Madhu, was taken to the Government Tribal Specialty Hospital at Kottathara. However, he succumbed to his injuries on his way.

As per the photographs going viral on social media, Madhu was attacked with sticks by the mob. Madhu can be seen tied up, while people around him can be seen standing next to him and clicking pictures, smiling for the camera.

He was handed over to the police but died soon after.

Police have claimed that Madhu has previously been accused of robbing shops and they had been trying to arrest him for the past few days. Three cases have also been registered against him in the past. He reportedly lived in the forests near the village and allegedly used to steal from local shops to survive.

Police also added that the locals had got CCTV visuals in which Madhu could be seen stealing from a shop. He was nabbed by a few locals on the outskirts where they tied him and brought him back to the town.

A case has been filed in connection with the incident but no one has been named as yet. The police are waiting for the post-mortem report to establish the cause of the death.

Police have, however, identified more than seven accused and will decide on what further action needs to be taken after they get the post-mortem report.
