Premier League 2015-16 Gameweek 1, Sunday football - As it happened...

The Gameweek 1 of new Premier League season continued on Sunday with three matches. Title contenders Arsenal suffered a humiliating 0-2 defeat at home against West Ham United, while Newcastle and Southampton settled for a 2-2 draw. Then, in a tight match between Stoke City and Liverpool, a brilliant Philippe Coutinho long ranger settled the issue at the Britannia Stadium. The opening week action concludes with Manchester City traveling to West Bromwich Albion, later tomorrow night.

In reply, Stoke launched an attack from the left flank with Peter Odemwingie trying a long ranger. But the ball failed to hit the target (90'). Three minutes added.

A Philippe Coutinho brilliance finally broke the stalemate at the Britannia Stadium. The Brazilian picked up the ball on the left top corner of Stoke box from a Joe Gomez pass, the did an exquisite turn to give him space for shooting. From some 26 yards, the diminutive Brazilian curled beautifully to find the top corner. And the goal to Liverpool. Just the right kind of goal for such an tight game.

After a long time, Stoke City got their corner. Peter Odemwingie's delivery from the flag-post, however, failed to find any of his team-mates (85').

Jordan Henderson, who has often been touted to lead the side after the departure of Steven Gerrard, found himself alone inside the Stoke half, and after few yards running, he tried to deliver a minus for Christian Benteke. What a wasted chance for Liverpool. Philippe Coutinho dribbled past four/five players and once inside the Stoke box, he tried, released the ball for unmarked Philippe Coutinho. But the Belgian wasted the chance, taking too much time to delivered. In fact, two defenders got the ball blocked.

Then, from the following play, Martin Skrtel even got a decent header. But the ball went over the bar (69').

The season opened interestingly opened with an own goal from Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker to give Manchester United a narrow win at Old Trafford.
