News agency Reuters has quoted a source as saying that the gunman who drove a heavy truck into a crowd in Nice was a 31-year-old Franco-Tunisian born in Tunisia. The man was not on the watch list of French intelligence services, but was known to police in connection with common law crimes such as theft and violence, the source said.

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the "barbaric and cowardly terrorist attack" that took place during Bastille Day celebrations in the French city of Nice. The council unanimously adopted a French-drafted statement that "condemned in the strongest terms" the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
The council reaffirmed that terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats to world peace and security.
