Bangalore, Dec 03: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday asserted that terrorists could never succeed in destroying the unity of the country and the spirit of the nation.

Paying tributes to Professor M C Puri who was killed in the terror attack on the Indian Institute of Science Campus three years ago, the Prime Minister said "they (terrorists) chose the Indian Institute of Science as their target because this great institution and this vibrant city have come to represent the spirit of a resurgent India."

"No coward, no terrorist, no enemy of our secular and democratic Republic will ever succeed in destroying the unity of our country, the journey of our people towards a better life and the spirit of the nation", he said inaugurating the centenary celebrations of the IISc.

Speaking on the occasion, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said that in view of the fact that Karnataka and Bangalore, in particular, had attracted global attention due to presence of various prestigious enterprises, the state government has decided to enhance security to face any eventuality.

Seeking the Centre's support in enhancing security, he said the state government has sought setting up of an NSG unit in Bangalore, three Indian Reserve Batallions, one Indo-Tibetan Border Police batallion in Belgaum, 18 coastal check post and 33 outposts, two helciopters and additional grant to enhance security level.

The Prime Minister, he said, had agreed to consider the demands sympathetically.
