Hyderabad: Fifty-one persons were taken into
custody on the border of Khammam-West Godavari districts in
Andhra Pradesh, while they were on their way to the proposed
Polavaram irrigation project site, to demonstrate against the
project, police said.
The protesters that included members of Telangana Student
JAC from Osmania University and lawyers, were on their way to
the site of the Indira Sagar Project near Ramayyapet in
Polavaram mandal of the West Godavari district to demonstrate
against the irrigation project.
The protesters were taken into preventive custody near
Jirugumilli checkpost, a senior police officer said, adding
they had already stepped up security arrangements and deployed
additional forces at all the check points and entry points of
both the districts.
Mild tension prevailed in the area as the protesters
started arguing with the police, when they were stopped and
taken into custody.
"As a precautionary measure, the activists were prevented
on the Khammam-West Godavari district border itself. A total
of 51 protesters have been taken into preventive custody and
all of them were taken back to Khammam and later released,"
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eluru Range) G
Suryaprakash Rao said.
The protesters have opposed the Polavaram irrigation
project saying some villages in Khammam district would get
marooned and cause large displacement of villagers,
particularly tribals, due to it.
