Chiranjeevi on Sunday demanded that Centre should declare Polavarm
irrigation project as a national project.
Chiranjeevi has been touring coastal districts of Andhra
Pradesh for last five days to seek support from the people on
his mission to declare Polavaaram as national project.
He entered Krishna district late last night after
finishing East and West Godavari districts.
Today also he held road shows where the Polvaram
irrigation projects canal work is under progress. On his way,
he has been addressing many public meetings from his own
He said though the Andhra Pradesh government has taken
Polavaram irrigation project in 2005 under its prestigious
Jalayagnam, nothing much has been achieved since then. He said
though the government spent only Rs 3,000 crore and the
project needs another Rs 12,000 cr, the present state
government is unable to provide sufficient funds to complete
He said the union government should declare the project
as a national project to allocate funds from central budget.
Chiranjeevi also lashed out the government that it has no
commitment to complete the project which will supply
irrigation water to the extent of 13 lakh acres in the dry
lands of Coastal districts.
The Polavaram project, to be built to a height of 150 ft,
is intended to irrigate acres in the uplands of the two
Godavari districts, Visakhapatnam and Krishna. The storage
capacity of the reservoir 75 tmc ft. The project will also
generate 960 MW power. The cost of the project is said to be
well in excess of Rs 12,000 crore.
