Cyclone Hudhud: Visakhapatnam airport badly damaged, but runway safe

Cyclone Hudhud has left the building of the Visakhapatnam airport literally in tatters.

Hyderabad: Cyclone Hudhud has left the building of the Visakhapatnam airport literally in tatters.

The cyclone, which made landfall in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam on Sunday, blew off the airport's roof and badly damaged the premises from inside with winds of 200 kmph.

While the airport had been closed as a precautionary measure on Saturday itself, it will now remain shut for some time for repairs.

The good news, however, is that the runway is intact and the air traffic control tower hasn't suffered much damage.

According to city Police Commissioner Atul Singh, a minimum of two to three days will be required to finish necessary repairs.

Till the airport is made operational, passengers wishing to fly out of the city of Andhra Pradesh will have to travel to either Rajahmundry - 190 km aways - or Vijayawada, some 350 kms away.
