Four arrested for election-time liquor distribution in AP

 The crime investigation department (CID) of Andhra Pradesh Police today said it had arrested four persons including a sub-inspector of Prohibition and Excise Department in connection with smuggling of liquor ahead of this year's general elections in Nellore district.

Hyderabad: The crime investigation department (CID) of Andhra Pradesh Police today said it had arrested four persons including a sub-inspector of Prohibition and Excise Department in connection with smuggling of liquor ahead of this year's general elections in Nellore district.

Rajendra Nirmal Kumar, a resident of Bangalore, was arrested by CID unit of Nellore yesterday. He was allegedly involved in 10 out of 11 cases in Nellore district.

At the instance of Parthasarathi Suresh of Pondicherry, Kumar arranged two trucks of illicit liquor during the April-May elections, police said, adding that he revealed that the liquor had been manufactured in Goa.

In the course of investigation Bathina Srinivasulu Reddy of Kadapa district and police sub-inspector E Vijaya Kumar and Govind Sankaraiah, a retired head constable (both with the Excise department) were arrested by CID unit of Tirupati.

With the help of Kumar and Sankaraiah, Reddy procured two lorry loads of spurious liquor and sold it through his shops in Kadapa and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh, police said.

"The excise officials also admitted to their involvement in bringing spurious liquor from Bangalore and Goa," CID said in a press release.
