Hyderabad: After Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah, Union Minister of State for HRD Daggubati Purandeswari has become the latest target of attack by followers of Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy.
Followers of Jagan have been attacking Purandeswari and her MLA husband Daggubati Venkateswara Rao over the last two days following the Congress high command`s directive to party leaders not to take part in the controversial `Odarpu Yatra` to be undertaken by the MP, son of former chief minister YSR Reddy, from September 3.
"Who are they to speak on behalf of the high command? Only Sonia Gandhi`s political secretary Ahmed Patel or AICC general secretary M Veerappa Moily can speak on behalf of the high command," several Congress MLAs and MLCs maintained.
Neither Purandeswari nor Venkateswara Rao reacted so far to the diatribe against them.
The supporters of Jagan burnt effigies of Venkateswara Rao at many places in the latter`s native Prakasam district, where the MP was scheduled to undertake the third leg of his
Also in Parchuru, the constituency represented by Venkateswara Rao, Jagan`s supporters burnt the MLA`s effigy alleging that he was trying to block the MP`s tour.
It was for the first time since 2004 when they joined the Congress that the Daggubati couple has come under attack from any quarter in the party.
Purandeswari, daughter of Telugu Desam Party founder-president NT Rama Rao, and Venkateswara Rao were enrolled into the Congress in 2004, with an objective to take
on TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu.
By roping them into the party, the Congress wanted to take advantage of the strained relationship between Chandrababu and Venkateswara Rao and run down the former chief minister, party leaders here say. YS Rajasekhara Reddy played a key role in this, they say.
Ambati Rambabu, who was suspended from the Congress following his criticism of Chief Minister Rosaiah and several MLAs and MLCs have now started claiming that the Daggubati couple was trying to block Jagan`s yatra.
"They are jealous of Jagan and his growing popularity. Daggubati seems to be dreaming of becoming the chief minister," a Jagan camp leader alleged.
Interestingly, the Jagan camp also pitted NT Rama Rao`s widow Lakshmi Parvathi against the Daggubatis. "Venkateswara Rao is doing this probably only out of jealousy," she reportedly told a television channel owned by Jagan.
