Jaya`s plea to AP on Kandaleru water release

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa requested her Andhra Pradesh counterpart Kiran Kumar Reddy to order immediate release of water from Kandaleru reservoir to meet Chennai`s drinking water needs.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday requested her Andhra Pradesh counterpart Kiran Kumar Reddy to order immediate release of water from Kandaleru
reservoir to meet Chennai`s drinking water needs.

In a letter to Reddy, Jayalalithaa said during 2010-11, only
4.6 tmcft was received as against the annual entitlement of 12
tmcft (under an agreement between the two states).
The present storage levels "will not be adequate" to meet
drinking water needs in the coming months, she said.

"I believe that the water storage position in all the
reservoirs of Krishna water supply project is comfortable and
it may not be difficult for the Government of Andhra Pradesh
to release water from Kandaleru reservoir."
"May, I, therefore request you to order the immediate
release of water from Kandaleru reservoir so as to realise
at least 1000 cusecs at the Tamil Nadu border to meet the
drinking water requirements of Chennai city up to October
2011," she said in the letter.
