Locals demand closure of Nagarjuna plant following mishap

Demanding a closure of Nagarjuna Agrichem Ltd plant, workers of various groups staged a road blockade on Chennai-Kolkata national highway.

Srikakulam: Demanding a closure of Nagarjuna Agrichem Limited (NALP) plant near here, where a major fire broke out yesterday, workers of various political parties and environmental groups staged a road blockade on Chennai-Kolkata national highway at Chilakapalem Junction on Sunday.

A sit-in was also held at the main gate of the plant, where 17 workers were injured in yesterday`s fire.

Traffic was disrupted for over two hours, police said.

District Collector G Venkatram Reddy ordered an enquiry by Additional Joint Collector Rajkumar into yesterday`s mishap, and directed the Inspector of Factories to take steps for closure of the factory under the provisions of Factories Act, official sources said.

Srikakulam MP, Dr K Krupa Rani and MLA, M Nilakantam visited the plant.
