Hyderabad: Praja Rajyam Party chief K Chiranjeevi's u-turn on Telangana statehood split the party whose leaders from Telangana region decided to float a separate party.

Convenors of the party's Telangana district units met in a hotel here after Chiranjeevi announced PRP's changed stand on the bifurcation of the state.

While protesting Chiranjeevi's volte-face on Telangana issue, these leaders, however, resolved to carry forward the "social justice" slogan of PRP and also work for "Saamajika (social) Telangana" under the banner of Telangana PRP.

PRP's Mahbubnagar district convenor Janardhan later decided to join Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS).

Earlier in the day, some party workers from Telangana districts tried to create trouble at the PRP headquarters at Jubilee Hills when Chiranjeevi was announcing his fresh decision on the statehood issue.

Police, however, prevented them from entering the party office and took them away to the nearby police station.

Some workers who made their way into the conference hall raised slogans decrying PRP's latest stand. Some of them also raised slogans against Chiranjeevi, which led to a wordy duel between PRP men hailing from Telangana and non-Telangana regions.

PRP official spokesman Shravan Kumar, who is a Telangana protagonist, broke down as he too was prevented by police from entering the party office along with a group of his supporters.
