New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed an Andhra Pradesh High Court direction for a CBI inquiry into alleged police torture of an university scholar in Telangana.

A bench of justices HL Dattu and CK Prasad stayed the inquiry on an appeal filed by the state government challenging the plea for a CBI probe into the alleged torture of Kakatiya University (KU) research scholar Vukanti Yakub Reddy.

The apex court, while staying the direction, sought a response of Reddy on the state's appeal.

On January 6, the high court ordered a CBI probe after taking a serious view of Warangal police allegedly using third degree methods on pro-Telangana agitators.

A Bench, comprising Justice Ghulam Mohammad and Justice K G Shankar, had directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and complete the probe within three months.

The court had expressed serious concern over alleged rights violation by the police and wanted CBI to do a thorough inquiry on the petition filed by Yakub Reddy who charged the cops with torturing him during interrogation.
