New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed
a petition alleging violation of a 1956 agreement aimed at
protecting the interests of Telangana region in Andhra
Pradesh.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan declined
to entertain the petition seeking enforcement of the
"Gentlemen`s Agreement" entered into between leaders of Andhra
and Telangana regions when the state was formed in 1956.
The petitioner M Narasimha Swamy had submitted that the
demand for a separate Telangana has arisen only because of
its violation.

He contended the agreement had provided safeguards with
the purpose of preventing discrimination against the people of
Telangana region.

Before the merger of Andhra and Telangana regions in
1956, the leaders of both the areas had signed on the
agreement for ensuring overall development of the state, he
said.

Andhra leaders like Bejawada Gopala Reddy, N. Sanjeeva
Reddy, Gouthu Lachhanna along with leaders from Telangana
including Burgula Rama Krishna Rao, K.V. Ranga Reddy, M.
Chenna Reddy and others signed on the agreement.

As per the agreement, a regional standing committee of
the state Assembly is to oversee the allocation of revenues
so that injustice is not done to Telangana.
