Guntur: A 30-feet high tower of over
1000-year-old Lord Bhava Narayana Swami temple in the coastal
town of Bapatla in the district collapsed on Sunday though no one
was injured in the incident, temple authorities said.

The "gopuram" or tower had developed cracks and
fissures recently as the temple is said to be over ten
centuries old, they said.

According to the authorities, the tower caved in in
the morning on the outer compound wall of the historic temple
though idols of the presiding deity did not suffer any damage
in the freak incident.

The temple was constructed during the reign of the
Chalukyas in the late tenth century.

The temple tower was renovated in 1803 by Raja
Vasireddi Venkatadri Naidu.

The district authorities are currently removing the
debris even as heavy rains are interrupting the operation.
