TRS delegation meets Home Secretary on Telangana `Appointed Date`

A delegation of TRS leaders on Wednesday met Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami, demanding advancing of the date on which the new state of Telangana will come into being from June 2.

New Delhi: A delegation of TRS leaders on Wednesday met Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami, demanding advancing of the date on which the new state of Telangana will come into being from June 2 as announced by the Centre.

TRS, which fears horse-trading, wants the `Appointed Date` to be before May 16, when counting of votes will take place for the Assembly elections held in the united Andhra Pradesh.

Senior TRS leader and Rajya Sabha MP K Keshav Rao, said though the names of legislators would be announced after the counting of votes, their term will be hanging in balance till June 2, as per the `Appointed Date` announced by the Centre.

Fearing that it may give room for horse-trading, he said, such a scenario could be avoided if the Appointed Date is shifted sometime before May 16.
Asked why his party was raising the demand as the Centre has already fixed June 2 which falls just a fortnight after the counting of votes, Rao wondered how an elected legislature could be kept in waiting.

TRS Politburo Member, B Vinod Kumar, who was part of the delegation, said that June 2 was chosen as the Appointed Date for Telangana as the term of Andhra Pradesh government ends on June 1.
"With the assembly dissolved and Presidential Rule being imposed, the argument on completion of the government term is null and void," he noted.
