New Delhi: Even as the Modi government mulls over options to tackle its belligerent neighbour, Pakistan has opened a new front against India.
With just hours to go for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's address to the UN General Assembly, Pakistan's permanent representative to UN Maleeha Lodhi told reporters in New York that “Pakistan's nuclear program cannot be restricted.”
Lodhi revealed that US Secretary of State John Kerry, during his meeting with Sharif, asked Pakistan to limit its nuclear program. In response, Sharif told Kerry that India should also implement the suggestion.
"The world should first put an end to nuclear activities undertaken by India," Lodhi said.
Pakistan Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, who was consulted by PM Sharif, before he boarded the plane to New York, had on Monday, met his top commanders and said the military was “watchful” towards the security imperatives of the country in the wake of “hostile narrative” by India.
“Taking note of a hostile narrative being propagated by India, COAS (Gen Sharif) said that we are fully cognizant and closely watching the latest happenings in the region and their impact on the security of Pakistan,” the statement said.
“Armed forces of Pakistan are fully prepared to respond to the entire spectrum of direct and indirect threat,” he said, expressing his satisfaction over operational preparedness of the army.
“Pakistan’s armed forces together with our resilient nation have surmounted every challenge and will thwart any sinister design against integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan in future as well,” Gen Sharif said during the meeting.
