Guwahati: Several persons, including women, were injured after police resorted to lathicharge and fired in the air to disperse an agitated mob on railway tracks in lower Assam on Tuesday, officials said.

The police and paramilitary forces resorted to lathicharge and then fired in the air at New Bongaigaon station where the All Koch Rajbonshi Students Union enforced a rail roko, they said.

Several trains including the New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express and Sampakranti Express were stopped at New Bongaingaon for a couple of hours as a result.

The Union also picketed Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon and Chautara stations in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, the officials said.

The agitation on the tracks was to demand a separate Kamtapur state and schedule tribe status to the Koch Rajbonshi Community.
