Guwahati: Assam police chief JN Choudhury on Wednesday said that easy accessibility of pornography is one of the reasons for an increase in number of sexual crimes by minors.

Choudhury made the statement in the wake of the incident in which five youths said to be minor allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl in the state.

Parents of the youth claim their children are minors. The youth were friends with the girl.

Reacting on the incident, Choudhury said the "accessibility of pornography has changed the mindset of many young boys. Earlier, there were more instances of women being raped by strangers but nowadays such crimes are often committed by a person or persons known to the victim."

A Juvenile Board on Monday sent the five to a reform home.

A newspaper has quoted senior superintendent of city police AP Tiwari as saying: "The girl, after having an argument with her father, left home on Saturday night and went to meet her friends the accused. All of them decided to spend to night at an abandoned house in the area, where the boys drugged her and committed the crime. We have almost finished the investigation and will soon file the chargesheet in the case."
