Guwahati: In a bid to make students
computer savvy and expand information technology education in
the state, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced
computers and laptops would be given to those who secure just
50 per cent marks in school board examinations from next year.
``My government has all along given thrust to
education because this alone can solve problems of illiteracy,
poverty and unemployment,`` he said at the Anundoram Barooah
Award 2011 here.
``Education has to be in tune with the times. We have
already started the process of introducing new courses,
especially towards skill development by tying up with
universities and colleges like Oxford and Westminster,`` he
The award, launched in 2005, is a government
initiative aiming to enhance competition in the student
community and to help them through the use of IT.
