Assam: Two persons arrested for demanding ransom

: Two extortionists have been arrested from Assam on the charge of demanding a ransom of Rupees five lakh from an IAS officer`s wife in Arunachal Pradesh, the police said.

Itanagar: Two extortionists have been arrested from Assam on the charge of demanding a ransom of Rupees five lakh from an IAS officer`s wife in Arunachal Pradesh, the police said.

The extortionists had threatened to kill either of her two sons if she failed to pay the amount, the police said quoting the FIR lodged by Namijaya Tapak, the wife of an IAS officer.

Abdul Salam, one of the extortionists was arrested from Molanpukhri village under Dhekiajuli police station of Assam’s Sonitpur district yesterday by a team of police officials from Naharlagun with the help of Assam police, Capital superintendent of police Surender Kumar said today.
The police had registered a case and launched an investigation on the basis of the FIR.

The IAS officer is presently posted in Goa.

The complainant’s driver Abdul Malek, younger brother of Salam, was arrested on January 26 last. During interrogation, he had confessed of being the mastermind, the SP said.
Police maintained electronic surveillance to track the location of the mobile used to send the SMS, which ultimately helped in solving the case.

The SIM card and mobile set were seized from Salam’s possession, the SP said.
