Assam violence: Advani for action on ‘root cause’ Zeenews Bureau

Guwahati, Assam: Stressing the need to address the “root cause” behind the recent round of communal violence in Assam, senior BJP leader LK Advani demanded that the government act against illegal migration from Bangladesh.

Advani, who is on a day-long visit to Assam, said the state as well as the central government has committed criminal delay in dealing with the situation.

Advani pointed out that illegal migration from Bangladesh was the root cause behind the ethnic violence in Assam as indigenous people of the state are being “squeezed out” of the own land.

“Due to the collusion between Government of India and the state government on illegal migration three problems have arisen. First, the indigenous people of Assam are feeling alienated as they are losing control of their own land, while illegal Bangladeshi’s have embarked in land grab. Second is the ethnic problem as people fear that they will be marginalised in their own areas. The third reason is the demographic change taking place in entire Assam,” Advani said.

“The three problems that have emanated from illegal immigration is a serious threat to unity and integrity of India,” he added.

Referring to the July 2005 SC judgement that declared the IMDT Act as unconstitutional, Advani demanded that those guilty of aggression should be deported.

The Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) (IMDT) Act was Indian law enacted in 1983 by Indira Gandhi government. The act was only applicable in Assam and described the procedures to detect illegal immigrants (from Bangladesh) and expel them from Assam.

The Act was pushed through mainly on the grounds that it provided special protections against undue harassment to the “minorities” that were affected by the Assam agitation, however it is said to be the biggest reason behind the growing illegal immigration from Bangladesh.

Advani said illegal immigration has led to a situation where 11 out of the 27 districts in Assam are now Muslim dominated.

The BJP veteran stressed that the need of the hour is to create national consensus on four burning issues:

1. Let this problem not be viewed as a Hindu vs Muslim problem. It should be viewed as Indian vs foreigner problem.

2. Updated national register of citizens must be created- non-citizens must be deleted from the voters list.

3. Non-violation of tribal rights in Bodo areas.

4. Assam should be saved to save India’s unity in the North-East

Advani added that he party will take up the issue in the Parliament during the forthcoming Monsoon Session.

Awakening quest - Moradabad
First of all we are humans and every human have right to live, no matter from where he belong. And regarding the problem of bangladeshi immigrants, it must be setteled by negotiation and policies. I don`t understand what is the requirement for national, communal boundaries. Every man should be free to choose where ever he want to live and die. as a human being I wish to see each and every part of the world whether it may be assam or even pakistan. Spread love not hate...a proud indian...

we saw what happened in kashmir ... we can see what is happening in assam ... tomorrow it is going to happen with everybody be it in delhi or any other state in india. but it is very sad that all the secularists who were shouting at Narendra Modi are quiet today. where are you guys? why are you silent now? someone was asking here ``what is the problem if muslims become majority in india``. let me tell you this is the issue of our survival now. we lost a lot of places in past. in 1947 we lost the area which is called pak and bangladesh today. we have almost lost kashmir. today it is assam. we know what happened with hindus in afganistan and iran. we know what has been happening with hindus in pak and bangladesh. if we can`t make a decision now then we can`t make a decision ever.

I am totally agree with Mr. Advaniji, the roots of this ethnic violence only because of infiltration from Bangladesh, though, government repeatedly denying the fact only for political gain, vote bank that have restoring by political party for long time. So, all Indian indigenous tribes should have to aware about the fact, the Politician like Ajmal tried to termed it as ethnic cleansing against the Muslim, to cleared the way for the formation of Bodoland, According to him, Bodos are only 25 percent how could form Bodoland and to implement the future plan Bodos are taking the ethnic cleansing as modus operandi but, that his calculations and, we can also make allegations that this violence are fueled by him. He, show the path for Muslim to genocide Bodos community. Muslims are majority in 11 districts of Assam, but, they are enjoying minority status. How they could be? Indian politician fear to change their status because, they fear to lose the Vote Bank.

Illegal Muslim migration from Bangladesh is not correct. There is Hindu migration from Bangladesh. Mr. Advani should know it very well. Bengali-speaking Muslims are there in huge numbers in almost all the districts/states adjacent to Bangladesh for long time, mostly just after conversion. So the problem in Assam should not be communalised. Hindu-Muslim riots in India now has become a common things. What was the causes of riots happened in Mumbai, Bhagalpur, Gujarat and also in other parts of the country? Communial politicians are always in main roll. In case of Assam, how the Bangladishi Muslims enter, purchase land in large scale and settle in India? This is impossible.

Mr. LK Advani you are yourself a very bad example of illegal immigration from Pakistan into India and you already created a lot of trouble in Hindu Muslim co-existing peaceful society of India, do not do bad politics in this old age.

MANIK MALHOTRA - LUDHIANA
Advaniji is correct. Root cause is the vote bank politics of anri hindu parties. These anti hindu parties can go to any extent to get the votes of ANTI NATIONAL ELEMANTS .

Pradip burman - Kolkata
The entire corrupted congress only for vote bank allowing Bangaladeshi Muslims to our country mainly in Assam and West Bengal this should be stopped immediately otherwise corrupted congress party will have to face people anger against this illegal immigration
