Assam: Violence spreads to Chirang, death toll 14 Guwahati: The death toll in the communal violence in Assam's Bodoland area rose to 14 Sunday even as the violence spread to Chirang district. The army has been pressed into service to assist the security forces.

A statement issued by the Assam government Sunday evening said that the 14 people have been killed so far and nine others injured due to the incidents of violence between two communities in the two districts of Kokrajhar and Chirang under the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD).

The statement further informed that there were seven incidents of violence took place in both the districts

More than 26,000 people have taken shelter in 36 relief camps in Kokrajhar district, it said.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has also instructed the state Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Nazrul Islam to visit the violence-hit areas on Monday.

Inspector General of Police, BTAD, SN Singh said that the situation has improved since Saturday) but "it is still tense".

"Army has been pressed into service and they are assisting the police and paramilitary forces throughout the Kokrajhar district," Singh told IANS.

While police recovered three bodies from near the Gourang river in Kokrajhar district Sunday morning, two people died and three others were injured after unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire at Mongolian Bazar under in Chirang district.

Police, however, initially termed the Mongolian Bazaar incident as an isolated incident.

"In another incident, three people were abducted today from a passenger vehicle in Chirang district close to Kokrajhar. This might be an isolated incident also we are not taking any chances and an investigation is on," Singh said.

Kokrajhar and Chirang fall under BTAD's jurisdiction.

The night curfew (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) imposed Friday in Kokrajhar was still on, Deputy Commissioner Donald Gilsellon told IANS.

He said the 12 people who were killed in the violence included members of the Bodo community and a religious minority.

Six companies and two platoons of central paramilitary forces had been deployed along with police battalions, he added.

The Assam government had also sent seven civil officials and 15 police officials from other districts to the Kokrajhar and Chirang districts to assist the administration in maintaining law and order situation.

According to official sources, violence started after gunmen attacked two student leaders -- Mohibul Islam and Abdul Siddique Sheikh -- in Magurbari Thursday night.

Following the incident, four former Bodo militants were shot dead Friday night. Another five people, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed in the district Saturday.

Assam Transport Minister Chandan Brahma had on Saturday announced Rs.3 lakh as compensation to the next of kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 to those injured in the violence.

Kokrajhar falls under the jurisdiction of BTAD which is dministered by Bodoland Territorial Council. The council came into existence after the signing of a tripartite peace accord among Bodo Liberation Tigers militants, the Assam government and the central government in February 2003.

After the rule of British....Pakistan a separate land for Muslim Was demanded, Gandhi granted it. Again Bangladesh was wiped out for Muslims. Now they are trying to wipe out Jammu-kashmir. Why the hell are this Muslims living in India still. Almost Every family got more than 10 members, how come they become minority & enjoying special packages from goverment. Now they are trying to wipe out the son of the soil, Bodo`s the earliest inhabitant`s of ASSAM. Guess how does it feels to be thrown out from one`s home.

We are suffering from the side-effects of an overdose of secularism. In the name of secularism, congress has given shelter to millions of Bangladeshi muslims for vote-bank. And bjp-rss is too preoccupied with factionalism and power-thirsty corrupt regional satraps. We hindus are insecure in our very own land. Most of the victims of the violence in kokrajhar are Bodos, and that too in a Bodo territorial council !

Hindus from Eastern India & South India are secular hypocrites who deserve this fate. They cry when Muslims kill/rape their own people but support Muslim jihadis when they kill people of North & Western India. The hypocrisy was at its peak after Godhra riots.

This is a sorry situation, but ought to happen when sons of soil feel threatened by unmitigated migration from an alien community which is not so ready to mingle with the majority. Bangladesh and Indian Government SHOULD step in to repatriate ALL of the illegal Bangladeshis. We Indians cannot take them any more. If Bangladesh cannot handle employment and population related issues, it simply cannot flush the surplus into India especially when Hindu minority of that very country is rapidly waning. Bangladeshi settlers are having same problem in Myanmar. `We have nowhere to go`, `We have been living here for past 25-50 years` are definitely not the excuses. If any other country feels pity about them (Arab or Europeans), you are free to take`em all. I know the ground reality as I had been in the North East for 2 years and have hopelessly seen the one way migration.

today an ashram had been burnt in Kokrajhar. This is nonsense. One should not destroy one`s religious institution. All human being are brother and sister so stop lilling own brother and sister. We gain nothing by killing each other. The people who are doing such kind of heinous things are misleaded.

Wow people! There should be a round of applause for you. Reciprocating one SIN and SHAMEFUL and HEINIOUS deed with other. There is no justification for any act of violence. Kashmiri pandits` migration was shameful, so was Gujarat and so was violence in N-E. And ``Indian``, you are no one to tell who deserved what, because of all the things, one clear thing is that you deserve condemnation for dishonoring your own religion. And malayappaswamy, OK..compared...now what. I see fanatics like you as the perpetrators in both Gujarat and Banladesh because you are no different. #Shame

How can hindus be fanatic in bangladesh when they are only 7% of the population there ? And mind you, the hindus were 30% of the population there in 1947 but reduced to 7% now. Also, hindus were 20% of the population of pakistan in 1947 but less than 2% now. IN SHARP CONTRAST, muslims were 10% of the population of india in 1947, but have risen to 15% now. So what do you conclude from this ? Remember, India is a secular democracy just because 80% of its people are hindu. Out of the 52 Islamic nations, only Turkey and Indonesia are truly secular, the rest are all fanatic islamist regimes. In malaysia, hindu temples are demolished with the blessings of the government almost every three days. In saudi arabia, iran and maldives, non-muslims are not allowed to freely practice their religions, and conversion from islam to another religion invites the death penalty. In pakistan and bangladesh, a silent but steady ethnic cleansing of minorities, particularly hindus, is constantly going on, and hindus there are cornered and helpless. Compared to that, the religious minorities in India have enough rights and security. The Gujarat riots were a TWO-WAY

Seven Bodo people are shot dead there, and only two muslims are dead in Assam, homeland of Bodos, and these muslims are killed in a clash. It does not look planned to me, but killing innocent people by shooting does not seem peaceful to me, may be because I am antimuslim, huh? And guess what? They just manufacture trouble wherever they are, we should send these porkies to porkistan, itz never too late..#%&@

Throw out these illegal bangladeshi muslim immigrants. They are the root of the problem. They are now trying to occupy our land.

Aaquil - Chennai
@ AntiMuslim - Kerala. it`s not the minorities (Muslims, Christians and others) who manufacture trouble. It`s people like you with fascist mentality and Hindutva agenda who are in jealous with Muslims and Christians. Do you know the fact that the existing Muslims/Christians are the ones who once converted themselves from Hinduism long back.
