Karimganj: BJP Lok Sabha MP Kabindra Purkayastha has sought intervention of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on the issue of alleged encroachment of forest land by Border Areas Development Minister Siddique Ahmed.

Purkayastha, a former Union Minister and MP from Silchar in south Assam, met Gogoi in New Delhi earlier this week in this regard.

Gogoi assured that he would ask Ahmed to clarify his role in the matter, Purkayastha said to sources.

Ahmed has been under attack from the Opposition during the past few weeks over his alleged role in grabbing reserved forest land in the Patharia ranges in south Assam`s Barak Valley, known for its rich forest wealth and elephant habitat.

A delegation of BJP leaders led by Cachar district unit president Kriti Bhushan Purkayastha had a few days earlier submitted a memorandum to Governor J B Patnaik seeking his intervention in the matter.
