CPI demands all-party meet on Assam situation

New Delhi: Expressing concern over Assam situation and exodus of northeastern from other parts of the country, the CPI on Saturday asked the government to urgently convene an all-party meeting to find ways to contain attempts by fundamentalists to spread disharmony.

"Both Muslim and Hindu fundamentalists tried to fish in troubled waters", spreading canards to provoke disharmony and fear psychosis, CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy told reporters after a three-day meeting of the party`s National Council here.

"We strongly urge the central government to convene immediately an all-party meeting to discuss the burning issues arising out of the Assam situation and also other ethnic and development problems of the Northeast," he said.

Reddy also announced a series of agitational programmes of the CPI and other Left parties and trade unions over the next few months, while criticising the UPA government on the "critical economic situation" facing the country.

"Government is again threatening to increase the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG that will have a cascading effect on the price situation as a whole," he said.

The CPI leader attacked both the Congress and the BJP for "match-fixing" over the continued disruption of Parliament, accusing them of being "equally mired in corruption".

Asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to own up responsibility "for allowing loot of our national resources and causing huge loss to the nation", he sought cancellation of all coal blocks given to private companies and a judicial probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge in the issue.

"The Prime Minister`s statement in Parliament is an attempt to cover up the truth and to legitimise the loot and plunder. It questions the CAG for its calculation and blames the state governments for implementation of the policies," he said.
