Diphu: Police and a mob exchanged fire which caused injury to eight people, including a police constable in Assam`s Karbi Anglong district on Sunday.
Police said the clash took place when police during routine patrolling last night stopped three motorcycle borne youths at Deothor and seized their vehicle as they could not produce proper documents but released them.
Irate villagers came to Deothor police post this morning demanding the release of the motorcycle and soon the crowd swell to more than 600.
As the mob turned violent, a person from the crowd opened fire injuring a police constable. They ransacked the police post and attempted to set it ablaze, the police said.
This caused the police to open fire in which seven people were injured, four of them critically.
Senior police and civil officials rushed to the spot and three persons were arrested in connection with the incident.
Police said the situation was now under control though tension prevails. The injured were rushed to Golaghat civil hospital whose authorities referred the four critically injured to Jorhat Medical College Hospital.
The situation was later brought under control though tension continues to prevail in the area, the police said.
