Guwahati: Former chief minister and president of the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Thursday demanded the immediate intervention of the Centre in ensuring safety and security of lives and property of the people of Assam.

``It is the responsibility of the Centre to ensure that the basic fundamental right of safety of life and property of the people of Assam are ensured``, Mahanta said in separate letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Assam Governor J B Patnaik.
The former two-time Chief Minister urged the trio to intervene as the law and order situation in the state had ``completely collapsed``.

``The state government has failed miserably in maintaining law and order and protecting the lives and properties of the people in the state, particularly in the last few months``, he said.
