Pursaram Choudhury (55) and the five others had last night gone to chase a herd of marauding jumbos that had been roaming in the area for past 15 days destroying farmland, the officer said.

The elephants attacked them and trampled Pursaram to death, he said.

Residents of Jhanjimukh blocked NH-37 yesterday near Mudoijan Road for several hours to press the district administration and the forest department for taking precautionary measures to drive away wild elephants towards Kaziranga National Park (KNP).
