Tezpur (Assam): Laxmi Orang began a three-day hunger strike
at Tezpur Nehru Maiden demanding punishment of those,
allegedly involved in the act.
Laxmi, then 17, was humiliated publicly with her
clothes removed when a massive procession, in which she was
participating, turned violent at Beltola area of the city on
November 24, 2007, according to the complaint lodged by her
after the incident.

The processionists had demanded Scheduled Tribe status
for Adivasis.

The government had instituted a CBI inquiry into the
charge of physical humiliation and a few persons were taken
into custody, official sources said.
"But I am yet to receive any official intimation on
the action taken against the culprits. My fast is to demand
for action against the guilty," Laxmi (22) told reporters

Laxmi and her supporters, participating in the
fast, also demanded ST status to Adivasi people residing in
Assam and enhancement of daily wages of tea garden labourers
by Rs 70-200 by the small and major tea gardens, respectively
in Assam.

They also demanded the duty hours of tea garden
labourers should commence from 9 am instead of the present 7
am and continue till 4 pm as usual.

Laxmi and her supporters further demanded
rehabilitation, with compensation, for the Adivasis affected
in ethnic violence and now sheltered in Kokrajhar
rehabilitation centres for years.

Laxmi was a contender as an AIUDF candidate for the
Tezpur lok sabha constituency during the last time but her
father Deba Orang replaced her due to underage and she was
defeated by AGP candidate Joshef Toppo.
