Vaishnavite scholar Sonaram Chutia dead

Eminent Vaishnavite scholar, educationist and freedom fighter Sonaram Chutia died at his residence in Upper Assam`s Jorhat district, family sources said today.

Guwahati: Eminent Vaishnavite scholar, educationist and freedom fighter Sonaram Chutia died at his residence in Upper Assam`s Jorhat district, family sources said today.

Chutia (98) died yesterday.

He is survived by three sons and four daughters. His wife predeceased him.

A renowned scholar of Sankardeva studies, Chutia had several books to his credit and was also the Chief advisor of the Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha, a religious and charitable organisation.

A prominent freedom fighter, Chutia was actively involved in the Quit India Movement and was imprisoned for more than two years.

Chutia retired as the headmaster of Teok Rajabari High School and in the year 2000 received the prestigious Sankardeva Award, instituted by the Assam government to honour persons of eminence in the field of Journalism, Art, Culture and Literature.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has condoled the death of Chutia.
