New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi
today rejected the opposition's charge that land boundary agreement with Bangladesh has compromised the state's interests and said "we have not conceded to all the demands"
of the neighbouring country.
During Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent two-day
visit to Dhaka, both the countries resolved a long-standing
border problem on demarcation of land boundary and exchange of
adversely-held enclaves.
"No compromise has been made against interest of Assam.
We have not conceded to all the demands of Bangladesh. It was
a long-pending issue and the pact was signed to resolve it,"
Gogoi, who accompanied Singh to Bangladesh, said here.
Opposition parties in Assam have alleged land belonging to Assam has been given away to Bangladesh under the agreement.
The conclusion of the Protocol to the 1974 Land Boundary
Agreement will pave the way for settlement of the long
pending land boundary issues including the undemarcated areas,
territories under adverse possession and exchange of enclaves.
Gogoi said the pact would improve ties between the two
countries.
"The pact is beneficial to both the countries," he said,
terming AGP and BJP's allegations as baseless.
The All Assam Students Union has alleged the land
agreement between India and Bangladesh was signed without the
approval of the people of the state or the Parliament.
