Angry villagers in Gaya district today attacked a police outpost and indulged in heavy stone-pelting prompting policemen to open fire in the air to disperse them.

The villagers were demanding that police hand over a man
who allegedly assaulted one of them.

Sarvesh Singh had allegedly assaulted Nono Manjhi of
Chakand area, SSP Amit Lodha said, adding Singh was later
taken to the outpost for interrogation.

Agitated over the assault of their neighbour, over 300
villagers gathered near the outpost and ransacked it demanding
that Singh be handed over to them.

They later started throwing stones and brickbats,
prompting the police to open fire 14 rounds in air to quell
the mob, the SSP said.

The villagers also damaged two vehicles at the outpost,
he said, adding that the situation is tense, but within
control.
