Patna: Altogether 916 persons were
arrested and sporadic incidents of violence on Thursday marred the
8th phase of panchayat election in Bihar which recorded a
turnout of around 59 per cent.
Director General of Police Neelmani said that the
arrested included four mukhiya and zila parishad candidates.
They were arrested to ensure free and peaceful poll.
Police had to open fire to quell crowds at Aurangabad
and Nawada trying to ensure fair and peaceful firing, he
None was injured in the firing, he said adding police
controlled the situation at Nawada and a few more places where
there were reports of clashes.
Police seized 151 vehicles, besides Rs 20,200 in cash
and 16 mobile sets at different places.
Polling held at 12090 polling stations, to decide the
fate of 86899 candidates across 58 blocks of 34 districts.
Around 50 lakh voters exercised their franchise during the
day, official sources said.
