Bihar flood toll rises to 6 with two more deaths

Patna: Two children on Thursday drowned in flood waters in Bihar taking the toll to six as the overall situation remained unchanged with major rivers flowing above the danger mark, officials said.

Two children drowned in Turhut canal at Gamharia village in East Champaran district today following rise in the water level, they said.

Central Water Commission report said major rivers like Bagmati, Kosi, Ganga, Gandak and Mahananda were maintaining rising trend.

While Bagmati was flowing 60 cm above the red mark at Benibad, the river was likely to swell further with rise in its water level, the report said.

Similarly, the Kosi was flowing above the danger mark at Basua and Baltara with forecast of further rise in its water level.

The Ganga was flowing 29 cm above the danger mark at Sahebganj, while Gandak, Burhi Gandak and Mahananda and Adhwara group of rivers were maintaining rising trend, the report said.

Over 100 villages were affected by the floods in Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj districts, the officials said.

Disaster Management officials said a 33-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team was camping in Saharsa with four boats.
