Bihar vying for Borlaug Institute

Bihar is in the race for the setting up of an internationally-acclaimed Borlaug Institute, famous for Green Revolution, state Minister for Agriculture Renu Kumari said on Wednesday.

up of an internationally-acclaimed Borlaug Institute, famous
for Green Revolution, state Minister for Agriculture Renu
Kumari said on Wednesday.

"We are in the run for establishment of the Borlaug
Institute of international standard for which the state will
provide full facilities", the minister said today.

A team of experts from Mexico visited the state early
this month, officials said.

"The scientists mostly from the Borlaug`s institute in
Mexico visited several places in the state and also went to
the Rajendra Agriculture University campus at Pusa here", they
said.

"We are happy to know the response from them that they
feel RAU a suitable place for setting up the institute, they
said.

Punjab is also eyeing for a similar institute, they said.

But the Bihar government has moved further ahead in this
direction and has agreed to provide a 500-acre plot at Pusa as
also other facilities from the resources for establishment of
the institute, they said.

The proposed institute-- Borlaug Institute of South Asia
will facilitate availability of new and improved seeds and
technology to farmers in the region. It is likely to be
established in collaboration with the International Maize and
Wheat Improvement Centre and will work in close coordination
with Borlaug Institute of International Agriculture based in
Texas and other research centres in South Asian countries,
they claimed.
