Maner: The last rites of Lance Naik Dhananjay Kumar, who was martyred in a recent encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara District, was performed here on Wednesday.
BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi was present at the ceremony.
Paying his tribute to Dhananjay's family, he said, "Dhananjay Kumar's body has arrived here today and we all have gathered to perform the last rituals. The area of Maner has thousands of people in the army. It is very sad that a young member of a family has lost his life. One of his brothers is also in the army, while the youngest one is also preparing for the same."
"I pay my due condolences to his family. Thousands of people have gathered for him here: that is a big mark of respect. I would like to confidently covey this message to the public that the Indian Government is prepared in all ways to face any situation. We are not weak anywhere and may be that is why the recent talks (with Pakistan) were called off. Just yesterday, four terrorists have been killed", he added.
One of his family members said, "He was killed by the Pakistani forces at the border. The Central Government keeps repeating the same thing: for every army man that dies at the border, we will kill six of theirs. But till now, the government is playing the role of an audience."
"I demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctions Rs 2 crore, so that a statue in Dhananjay's name can be erected here. Also, his wife should be given employment", he added.
After performing the last rites, his father told a news agency, "My son has been martyred. I am not worried about that because he was the son of an Indian. Revenge should be taken against Pakistan."
Kupwara, which is 90 kilometres from the Line of Control (LoC), has seen a spate of violence of late. Recently, two soldiers were killed in separate incidents, with one being killed in an encounter and the other in a guerilla attack. A reported five militants have been killed as well.
